Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre in Suffolk suffered extensive fire damage in 2004, but is now back in action following a period of rebuilding, repair and refurbishment. When the fire took hold it destroyed much of the site but the changing rooms fortunately only suffered from serious smoke damage without charring.
Helmsman, the UK’s leading manufacturer of changing room equipment, has been delighted to play its part in restoring the site with a role that included some clever re-use of existing changing equipment.
As the changing rooms were not charred, Helmsman was able to remove, refurbish and re-install the equipment it had installed before. “The fact that our products could do this,” commented managing director Anne Rivett MBE, “is a real testament to their durability, quality and longevity.” The lockers in the changing areas were removed off site and then taken back to Helmsman – just a few miles away - for the refurbishment. This meant stripping them out, cleaning the door and carcass and replacing the locks with remoulded coin locks and reinstalling them.
"Helmsman's ability to service and refurbish existing equipment as well as providing full new installations provided an excellent, economic answer,” said Ivan Sams, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Head of Property Services.
“With their added ability to manufacture facilities, in addition to lockers, to other ancillary areas their tender provided the fullest answer."
