School children involved in the ‘joinedupdesignforschools’ project worked with William Warren, a leading designer and Helmsman, to produce an innovative locker design for young children.
The locker is designed to encourage ease of recognition and respect by young children through individualising the product.
“Every child can easily recognise their own locker through a clever combination of door shapes, 96 colour combinations and the ability to personalise the door design. There is even a post slot for special little notes.” Explains Anne Rivett, Managing Director at Helmsman.
This all encourages children to look after their own special locker space throughout the primary school, and allows safekeeping of personal items.
The locker is light enough to be carried by its handles, and can be installed to a wall, bench mounted or used as a seat. It is supplied with a simple door closure, but alternatives such as a combination lock, which aids number recognition, or lock & key / padlock are also available.
This clever locker project was so successful that it was exhibited in the Victoria and Albert museum in London at the ‘joinedupdesignforschools’ exhibition and it also attracted great interest at the Education Show recently held at the NEC. “This project was a joy and an exercise we would certainly like to repeat, children are extremely innovative and certainly know what they want,” concludes Anne.
The innovative primary school locker - Classroom Treasure - will be launched throughout June and July 2005.
